Victor Chandler
Founder of Victor Chandler

Victor Chandler took charge of his family’s chain of betting shops in the UK in 1975 and went on to transform the business into a hugely successful international telephone and online operation. Along the way, he changed the face of the betting industry with his decision to relocate the bookmaker to Gibraltar in the late nineties.

Chandler was one of the first people in the industry to recognise the potential of remote gambling for expansion into foreign markets. That realisation eventually led to the move to Gibraltar, which allowed Victor Chandler to offer both its UK and international customers tax-free betting.

The success of the switch prompted other bookmakers to follow and helped to establish Gibraltar as an important jurisdiction for the international betting and gaming industry. It is thought the trend for moving offshore also persuaded the UK Government to scrap its 9% betting tax in 2001.

After selling his stake in the rebranded BetVictor to Michael Tabor 2014, Chandler returned to the betting industry in 2017 as Chairman of BetLion, a sportsbook focused on African markets.
