History
Alfred Waterhouse, the then President of the Royal Institute of British Architects, was commissioned by the National Liberal Club to design Whitehall Place to be a home for all Liberals when in London. The first stone was laid by William Gladstone in 1884, which can be seen in the Cellar Room. Both he and the building went on to serve their country with distinction; William Gladstone served four terms as Prime Minister. The building become a London landmark, serving as home to foreign embassies, the Ministry of Defence and the secret services during the Second World War.
The London Transport Network
One Whitehall Place is quickly reached by all manner of transport. There are convenient connections with both London City and London Heathrow airports. Two major mainline stations are within walking distance from the hotel, as is the Embankment Tube station which is on the Circle, District, Bakerloo and Northern lines.
River boats arrive and depart from the Embankment pier, just a two minute walk from the hotel. These provide speedy, but pleasant connections to the City Square Mile, the O2 and other destinations along the Thames.
