EPIC Risk Management: Responsible gambling must be placed at the forefront of the industry’s agenda

The UK is proof that the failure to prioritise safer gambling initiatives can result in regulatory, political and social backlash – that’s according to Paul Buck, CEO and Founder of EPIC Risk Management.

Speaking to SBC ahead of Betting on Sports Europe – Digital 2020, Paul Buck explained that there is a definite strong link between betting integrity and problem gambling, which is becoming increasingly more recognised across regulated betting markets.

What are you looking forward to at Betting on Sports Europe – Digital 2020?

BoSE is always an important event to catch up again with people at all levels of the sector. The tracks this year look great and we are looking forward to the integrity debate on Day 2.

What would be your biggest bit of advice for betting and gaming businesses trying to mitigate the impact of COVID-19?

Don’t chase your losses and damage the longer term sustainability of your business and the industry. Nobody should gamble with more time or money than they can afford to and they shouldn’t be enticed to do so.

What are you promoting at Betting on Sports Europe – Digital 2020?

Sector leading, accredited operator training. We believe training should be bespoke to the needs of an operator and not off the shelf which at best will be 60% relevant.

The U.K. is proof that if the gambling industry doesn’t prioritise safer gambling then it will face the consequences from a regulatory, political and social viewpoint.

Which operator has impressed you the most in 2020?

Never an easy question when you have different clients in the sector but I would say GVC.

They have their Changing for the Bettor initiative that is well structured, logical, concentrating on the right pillars and is being actioned and invested in. It isn’t just lip service.

GVC are also applying the CFTB principles globally through their core business and their Global Foundation and Foundation US – even where regulation doesn’t dictate they have to. That tells me that their motivations are well positioned.

What partnership has stood out in the past 12 months?

Takeover rather than partnership perhaps but the Flutter group now coming together has now formed a huge global business taking in Paddy Power, Betfair, SkyBet, FanDuel and SportingBets.

It will be interesting to see how the brands align and from our perspective how they use the might of the joint group to promote safer gambling across the world.

Which parts of the conference agenda have caught your eye?

Sports betting integrity. EPIC works extensively across elite sport and has led the way in research along with partners. There is a definite link between betting integrity and problem gambling and this is being recognised more and more around the world.
