SBC Notícias Brasil: What are the main challenges when creating technical standards for lotteries?
Esmeralda Britton : One of the biggest challenges is to make the technical standards sufficiently robust, clear and, above all, reliable, to guarantee integrity and transparency, but also flexible to adapt to different operational contexts in relation to new trends in the gaming sector – especially the regulations in the region, balancing innovation and security.
SBC Notícias Brasil: How is it possible to guarantee impartiality in the creation of these standards?
Esmeralda Britton : Impartiality is guaranteed through the participation of independent organizations, which operate under a strict set of ethical and technical rules and have extensive knowledge of different mechanisms, games and probabilities that may exist to rely on different monitoring systems, in addition to the monitoring of regulatory bodies that supervise without interfering in commercial interests.
SBC Notícias Brasil: How do certification laboratories ensure compliance with technical standards?
Esmeralda Britton : The laboratories perform rigorous testing under controlled conditions, regularly audit certified systems and validate that operational processes comply with the requirements and procedures established in each standard. The methodology includes traceability, detailed documentation and updates as part of continuous improvement.
SBC Notícias Brasil: How does collaboration between certification laboratories and regulatory bodies work? And between the same laboratories and operators?
Esmeralda Britton : It is a triangular relationship – laboratories provide technical validation, regulators establish the regulatory frameworks and operators align with both [laboratories and regulators] to comply with the requirements. Cooperation occurs in an environment of trust, transparency and continuous improvement.
SBC Notícias Brasil: From your perspective, how will the certification process evolve in Latin America in the coming years?
Esmeralda Britton : Regional standardization will be deepened, possibly under common schemes that recognize shared certifications. We will see more automated processes, with real-time audits and dynamic certifications – not just by product, but by process.
Adaptability must be considered in the face of the continuous change we are experiencing, considering environmental sustainability, cybersecurity and digitalization, but above all, considering the business continuity of different lotteries in the region.
SBC Notícias Brasil: What are the main differences between the certification processes in different countries in the region?
Esmeralda Britton : The differences range from the maturity of regulatory frameworks to the levels of technical requirements. There are countries with very advanced schemes and others in the implementation phase. Whether the lottery is state-owned, concessioned or private also influences.
Something important to consider is the necessary adaptation, for which it is necessary to be prepared, counting on timely and conscious change management in the face of emerging transformations in the gambling industry, always focusing on improving the customer experience.
SBC Notícias Brasil: What will be the role of emerging technology in the certification and standardization of lotteries?
Esmeralda Britton : Emerging technology will enable real-time validation, AI-based monitoring, Big Data analytics for informed decision-making, and traceability through blockchain. This will strengthen transparency and increase public trust by automating different processes and reducing certification times.
SBC Notícias Brasil: Why is it important to discuss this topic at an event like SBC Summit Americas?
Esmeralda Britton : Because it is the ideal space for sharing experiences between regulatory bodies, operators and technical experts. Certification is a pillar of gaming integrity – and by discussing it openly, we strengthen the ecosystem and foster regional cooperation, which, with this type of event and the socialization (networking) of different experiences from regions and countries, as is the case with this important topic of certifications, boosts trust between sectors.
