Originally designed by Portuguese architects Carlos and Guilherme Rebelo de Andrade for the 1922 International Exhibition in Rio de Janeiro, Pavilhão Carlos Lopes began life as a showcase of Portuguese innovation and craftsmanship on the world stage.

Following the exhibition, the structure was dismantled, transported across the Atlantic, and reconstructed in Lisbon, where it opened as the Palace of Exhibitions in 1932.

Over the decades, the venue became an important part of Lisbon’s cultural and sporting heritage, hosting major exhibitions, international competitions, and a wide range of public events. In 1984, it was renamed in honour of Carlos Lopes, whose marathon victory at the Los Angeles Olympics secured Portugal’s first-ever Olympic gold medal.

Following an extensive restoration completed in 2017, Pavilhão Carlos Lopes has been transformed into one of Lisbon’s most distinctive event venues.
